Cursus Publicus was commissioned by Valerie Smith for Sonsbeek 93 in Arnhem. The installation was located in a disused post office, in use by a local theatre company. The glazing on two sides of the main postal hall was shuttered to darken the old postal hall for projections. A large black fabric screen was made to conceal a large decorative motif, above head height, along the main rear wall. Booths, stalls and the safe room were used to present postal ephemera and video on monitors and projected.
A multi-projector 35mm slide/sync sequence with sound was composed of stills from a film conserved in the city archives. The film depicted the invention of an innovative 'clean to the touch' ink for use in newsprint. Columns of information about the martyrdom of many St Eusebius' recorded in history were also projected as scrolling lists. Patron saint of the city, his tongue and some bones are housed in reliquary , a likeness, in the central church. Having made a visit to the city early in the year to visit venues and dicuss ideas, the final work was installed on site prior to the opening.
